Big News for Young Writers! 🎉
The Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest has expanded for 2026—and we’re excited to share what’s new!
What’s New in 2026?
Junior Division Added!
For the first time, students in 7th and 8th grade can participate! The contest now offers two divisions:
| Division | Grades | 2026 Topic Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Junior | Year 7-8 | Inventions that Changed How We Live |
| Senior | Year 9-12 | Choose one: • Theme A: Global Culture in the Digital Era • Theme B: Security in a Multipolar World • Theme C: Technology, Innovation, and Power |
This is a wonderful opportunity for younger students to develop research and writing skills while exploring topics that matter to them!
📅 2026 Submission Cycles
Three flexible deadlines mean students can choose the timeline that works best for them:
| Cycle | Article Submission Deadline | HIR Defense Day |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2026 | May 31, 2026 | June 29, 2026 |
| Summer 2026 | August 31, 2026 | October 5, 2026 |
| Fall/Winter 2026 | January 2, 2027 | February 5, 2027 |
Registration and payment must be completed before submitting your article.
🛡️ What is HIR Defense Day?
Defense Day is a unique opportunity for finalists to showcase their work.
Students selected as finalists are invited to a virtual event where they deliver a 15-minute presentation of their article. Following the presentation, students participate in an oral defense, answering questions from Harvard International Review judges. This process allows students to demonstrate their depth of understanding, critical thinking, and authenticity in real-time.
